Medicare Parts: A, B, C, D

There are four major parts of Medicare. Medicare Parts A and B are known as Original Medicare and have been around for the longest amount of time. Part C and Part D are newer additions to Medicare. Part C was officially integrated into Medicare in 1997, and Part D was added in 2006. Both parts can make a significant difference in the quality of care you receive, as well as how much it costs. Medicare will only cover a portion of your medical expenses, so you will have to cover the rest of the costs either out-of-pocket or through supplemental insurance plans. Medicare Part C and Part D provide you with additional ways to cut down the cost of your medical expenses.

Medicare Part C Overview

Medicare Part C is available to you if you already have Parts A and B. Part C is another name for the Medicare Advantage plans that are insurance plans offered by private companies and approved by Medicare. These plans will generally help you pay some of your medical costs. They include everything that Original Medicare offers but can also include additional coverage, for services such as dental, vision, or hearing care.

Medicare Part D Overview

Part D will provide you with drug coverage that can help you pay for your prescription medication. You can receive this coverage either with a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan or with a Medicare Advantage plan, as most will include Part D coverage. However, you typically can be in only one Medicare Advantage or stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan at a time. If you enroll in a new policy for drug coverage you will be automatically unenrolled from your current plan.
