Trial Work Period (TWP)

The Trial Work Period (TWP) is a period during which someone receiving Social Security disability benefits may test their ability to and still be considered disabled. During the TWP a disability recipient may work in as many as 9 months and continue to receive benefits. This period continues until 9 months are accumulated (not necessarily consecutive) within a rolling 60-month period. During this period, full Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are paid regardless of how high the earnings might be as long as the work activity is communicated to the Social Security Administration and the disabling impairment is still present.
