Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits

SSI, or Supplemental Security Income, is administered by the Social Security Administration. Monthly benefits are available to qualifying recipients with limited income and resources who are blind, aged 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability. Children with disabilities or who are blind may also get SSI. Supplemental Security Income is financed by general funds of the U.S. Treasury and recipients may be eligible for state run Medicaid. Other requirements include:

  • be either a U.S. citizen or national, or a noncitizen in one of the certain alien classifications granted by the Department of Homeland Security;
  • reside in one of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands; and
  • not be absent from the U.S. for a full calendar month or 30 or more consecutive days.
