Medicare
A federal health insurance program for people 65 and older and certain younger people with disabilities. Certain criteria are required for Medicare such as:
- Individuals aged 65 who are able to sign up 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after their 65th birthday.
- Individuals who applied to start getting retirement benefits, or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, at least 4 months prior to turning 65 will automatically get Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) the month they turn 65.
- Individuals deemed disabled by the Social Security Administration and who are eligible to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for 24 months post-entitlement date. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who only receive SSI are not eligible for Medicare.
- Individuals diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) are eligible.
Medicare is overseen by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
