Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

The 7-month period in which individuals are initially eligible to enrolled in traditional Medicare, Part B and Part D. The 7-month period consists of the three months before, the month of, and the three months after an individual’s 65th birthday or 24th month of disability.

Individuals eligible for an IEP are:

  • People turning 65: The most common IEP is the 7-month period around your 65th birthday.

  • People with a qualifying disability: Your IEP begins 3 months before your 25th month of receiving Social Security or RRB disability benefits.

  • People with ALS: You can enroll in Medicare when you begin receiving disability benefits for ALS.
