Expediated Reinstatement of Benefits (EXR)

Also referred to as an EXR. A Social Security Work Incentive that enables a person whose benefits have ended because he or she worked and had earnings to request that their benefits start again without having to file a new application as a result of not being able to work again due to their disability. After requesting an EXR, a claimant may be eligible to receive up to six (6) months of provisional benefits while Social Security determines eligibility. This provides a safety net for those who go off disability benefits because they returned to work.

There are certain requirements:

• You lost your Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income benefits within the previous five (5) years because your earnings exceeded the SGA cap.

• You are again unable to work sufficiently to exceed the SGA amount due to a condition that meets the SSA definition of disability.

• The disability preventing you from working is the same condition that you were initially awarded for or is a closely related condition.

If you are denied an Expediated Reinstatement of Benefits, you may appeal within 60 days of the date of the letter.
