Benefits such as those administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) are crucial to securing a stable financial future for millions in this country. Unfortunately, the process of applying for and receiving those benefits has become increasingly complex due to Social Security’s lack of funding, staffing shortages, and looming backlogs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

While there have been positive developments in the past year, including the return to in-person services in field offices and for hearings, as well as a major COLA increase for 2023, more needs to be done by Congress to help improve Social Security’s administrative processes. 

Obstacles to gaining an approval
We see our clients struggle each day as they move slowly through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application process, with many applicants waiting more than two years for a decision with no guarantee. With less than half of SSDI applications approved after initial receipt, it is crucial applicants receive the appropriate support – starting with their initial application and continuing through any subsequent appeals, if necessary.

Ahead of the holiday season, we wrote to Acting Social Security Commissioner Dr. Kilolo Kijakazi, offering her and the entire Social Security Administration support to address the many obstacles standing in the way of individuals securing benefits timely and accurately. Dr. Kijakazi remains persistent in her pursuit of ensuring clients receive services timely and safely. While we stand in support of these efforts, additional action must be taken to support the growing population of those in need of Social Security services. We urge Congress to take the necessary steps to help support the staffing, technological, and other needs of the Administration to provide applicants the needed support during such a difficult time.
