Returning to work after a lengthy absence can be daunting. Disability is complex, and not only is it essential that an individual with a disability finds a job that matches their unique needs and past experience, but even after returning to work, both workers with disabilities and their employers need to be equipped to deal with evolving needs to ensure success for all parties. Unfortunately, this is often easier said than done, and the experience leaves many individuals with disabilities feeling anxious, uncertain, and overwhelmed.
We created this video to examine two core aspects of returning to work after a disability-related absence: finding a job that matches one’s unique needs and abilities and ensuring that the appropriate workplace accommodations are in place to maximize the likelihood of long-term success. In the video, we follow the story of Joe – an SSDI beneficiary looking to return to work after being out of work for two years due to a serious back injury. He deals with lingering pain and other issues but has worked hard on his recovery and wants to see if he can get back into the workforce. Joe faces some challenges on the job as his pain increases, and he realizes that he needs accommodations to help him do his job without exacerbating his pain. This is a nerve-wracking experience for Joe, as he worries about being viewed differently due to his disability. These emotions compound the challenges of returning to work and emphasize the importance of utilizing professional absence management services like those offered by Brown & Brown to both empower workers on their journey to self-sufficiency and support employers looking to create a more inclusive environment for their teammates.
While Joe is a fictional character, his story is inspired by the thousands of real people who navigate the complex journey of returning to work after a disability-related absence each year. Every individual has a unique story, and everyone’s return to work journey looks different. We hope that this video helps you step into the shoes of someone returning to work after a time of absence to better understand the process of utilizing Social Security’s Ticket to Work program, the many-layered emotions that go into returning to work, and how the workplace can become a more accommodating environment for individuals with disabilities.
