May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month!

By Lauryn May 6, 2020

Each May, the Council for Disability Awareness teams up with various insurance industry leaders to celebrate Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM), which works to bring awareness of the importance of disability insurance coverage. DIAM seeks to educate all individuals, regardless of age, about the importance of protecting their income through disability insurance coverage.

The Social Security Administration has found that 25 percent of 20-year-olds will become disabled before they reach retirement age. Despite statistics, many still choose not to purchase income replacement disability coverage. Young and healthy workers may forgo electing or purchasing coverage thinking they have no need, or may not qualify, for the benefits for which they have paid. For some, disability coverage automatically transitions to thoughts of diagnoses of cancer, heart conditions, and other “older age” impairments. This coverage, however, can cover a variety of conditions impacting individuals of all ages including leaves of absence due to depression or anxiety, as well as medical leave incurred due to a motor vehicle accident.

For those who fall victim to a disabling event that they are not prepared for, the sudden loss of income may trigger financial distress. Disability benefits provide individuals with crucial financial support during a time that they need it most. These benefits provide assistance not only to the disabled individual, but their family members as well. A spouse who may need to act as a caregiver and is required to take a leave of absence, can focus on the health and well-being of their loved one instead of worrying about their income. It is important to invest in your future – protecting your income being part of that.

At The Advocator Group, we work to secure fast and favorable Social Security Disability Insurance decisions to replace your loss of income on a temporary or permanent basis. We are here to help as we navigate this journey together!

Nothing in this post is intended as advice or a suggestion to elect or not elect to claim benefits of any kind, including Social Security benefits, nor is it intended as financial advice in any way.  The decision to claim benefits is a personal one that is contingent upon each individual’s unique circumstances.
