Disability Examiner

A disability examiner is someone who specializes in the analysis of applications for disability benefits. These specialists work within their state’s Disability Determination Services (DDS) office to determine whether an applicant is disabled under the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disability.

The disability examiner does a very thorough inspection of each claim. They, along with medical and vocational experts, will seek to determine whether an individual meets the SSA’s rigorous definition of disabled. During disability examinations, the severity of the disability in question will also be determined. If the disability examiner has determined you meet the medical requirements to be considered disabled, the SSA will make the decision as to the benefit amount you will receive.

It is likely that a disability examiner will request additional information during their evaluation. Claimants may be asked for medical records or, in some cases, required to undergo another medical exam. Filling out a disability application correctly is incredibly important to the disability determination services process. A complete and thorough application may increase an individual’s chances of approval in an expedited manner, as the disability examiner may be less likely to request additional information.
